Rudolf, a kedves kis rénszarvas életet megkeseríti piros orra. Ezért sokan csúfolják, társai kiközösítik. Hiába, még a szánhúzó versenyt is ő nyeri meg, mégis más viszi el a díjat és a dicsőséget. A kis Rudolf bánatában el bujdosik. Kis időn belül új barátokra lel, egy jegesmedve és a kis róka kepeben. Nagy dicsőség számára, mikor azt a megtisztelő feladatot kapja, hogy ő húzza a Mikulás szánját, hiszen a hatalmas hóviharban csak a piros orra világítja be a környéket. De emellett a mikulás ősi ellenséget is jó útra tereli, jószívűve változtatja.
