Egy nemesi származású falusi lány iránti szerelmétől hajtva, a fiatal Masa gyorsan emelkedik a ranglétrán az egyszerű gyalogostó a veterán szamuráj parancsnokságig. Azonban a jutalma árulás, hazugságok és végül a szamuráj társa által kikényszerített öngyilkosság. E drámai történetbe szőve két brit történész figyelemreméltó új bizonyítékokat nyomozott ki a régi háborús leírásokból, melyek a szamurájok igazi sötét oldalát mutatják be.
