Alaska 1897 rok. Do portu przypływa statek z ponad tysiącem ludzi na pokładzie. Wszyscy ogarnięci są gorączką złota. Wśród nich jest 20-letni Jack London (Jeff East). Chłopak szybko przekonuje się, że w miejscu, do którego dotarł, nie obowiązują żadne prawa, wygrywają zaś najsilniejsi. Krótkie spotkanie wystarcza, by Jack i Soapy Smith (Rod Steiger) zostali wrogami. Kolejną osobą, z którą London wchodzi w konflikt, jest Will Ryan (Michael Hogan). Chłopak odbiera mu psa Bucka, nad którym ten się znęca. Odtąd jedynymi przyjaciółmi Jacka są odratowany zwierzak i Merritt Sloper (Robin Gammell). Razem podążają w kolumnie poszukiwaczy złota. Ich celem jest jezioro Lindeman, tam podróżnicy muszą zbudować łódki i dopłynąć do Klondike nim nastanie zima. Czeka ich wiele nieprzewidzianych trudności.
