Starý manželský pár Hirajamovcov sa rozhodne odcestovať z Hirošimy do Tokia, aby navštívil svoje deti a vnúčatá. Žiaľ, zistia, že sú všetci zaneprázdnení, v podstate nikto nie je príliš nadšený, že po dlhom čase opäť vidí svojich rodičov, najmä preto, že by sa o nich museli počas pobytu postarať. Nakoniec si ich prehadzujú ako horúci zemiak a posielajú ich do luxusného hotela. Ale starí páni neprišli do Tokia, aby polovicu svojej návštevy strávili v nejakom, hoci aj prvotriednom hoteli...
