世民即位大赦天下的诏令传到贝州。赵德言仍自作聪明地认为这一切不过是表面文章，陛下真正的心思还是要消灭前东宫的旧党，他写了一份贺表告魏征和李思行合谋造|反。魏征等人派人突围回长安。公元626年，武德九年八月二十一日，世民下诏立长孙王妃为皇后。世民与长孙皇后在甘露殿对坐，回忆起十二年的夫妻生活，长孙皇后提起了一个严肃但又不得不说的话题，立谁为太子。世民接受了长孙皇后的意见，许诺立长子承乾为太子，但不立刻举行加冕礼。魏征和赵德言一行回到了长安。世民重新强调了天下和解的政策。赵德言被革职。
