世民对元吉的草率非常不满。他急忙释放了尉迟敬德，并向其表示了歉意，令尉迟十分感动。元吉认为世民偏袒外人不把自己放在眼里，十分气愤。尉迟和元吉从此开始互相怨恨。世民接连攻克了洛阳周边的城镇，使洛阳成了孤城，胜利的消息让李渊兴奋不已。洛阳城中粮草已断，王世充把希望寄托在河北窦建德的援兵上。窦答应了王世充的请求，从河北向河南杀来，欲解洛阳之围。世民为了不让唐军腹背受敌，提前率领精锐部队赶往窦建德必经的武牢关迎击敌人。临行前，世民将统领北邙山大营的权利交给了元吉，并叮嘱他只围毋战。世民星夜兼程，长途奔袭来到武牢关。不久后，窦的部队也到达了武牢关。两军初次交手，窦便大败而归。窦的谋士魏征向窦建议转攻长安。可刚愎自用的窦根本听不进魏征的话。
