楚天鸣并没有认出玉笙，但仍以自己和徒弟徐愧的处境为由要玉笙离开，但徐愧已对玉笙生情，要求把玉笙留下，获允。衙门失火，当年的案件记录被焚，公孙策提议展昭从江湖中追查。展昭带同张龙、赵虎前往居住在断魂岭下的一名故友——老和尚处查问，惜发现老和尚已死，并发现被指是当年杨家命案的元凶——楚天鸣的墓碑，同时在一座菩萨像下发现楚天鸣的刀，但是老和尚当年抚养的孤儿徐愧却不知所踪。路强及另一盗匪木头被展昭发现，交手后路强和木头逃走，但展昭已经认出路强，而木头亦被张龙、赵虎认出，路强唯恐事情败露，欲杀木头灭口，并将其打下山崖。玉笙要为父母报仇，设计把楚天鸣推下山崖，但楚天鸣无恙并救下木头。楚天鸣知木头乃被路强所伤，往找路强，徐愧追出。俩人在路上遇路强。路强不敌楚天鸣，即指责楚天鸣也是盗匪，并趁其分神之机逃走。楚天鸣誓要救回木头，运功替木头疗伤。玉笙即趁楚天鸣休息之机再次下手。
